SFU General Information

The Simon Fraser University is named after a Loyalist fur-trader and explorer who journeyed down the Fraser River in 1808. If you look at the university's coat of arms, you will find it is the crest of the Fraser Family. Located east of Vancouver, the university offers a magnificent view of the Burrard Inlets, the Fraser River and the Vancouver Habour.

MacDonald recommended the creation of a new university in the Lower Mainland. When the project was given the green light, MacDonald was appointed Chancellor. MacDonald went ahead with his dreams of forming a university on top of the 1200 foot Burnaby Mountain. Competitions for the project were held. It was won by a team of architects; the notable Erickson and Massey along with 4 other architects and soon set about building the university.

In 1964, the Simon Fraser University began its construction and 18 months later, it opened was open to the public. In first year, it received 2,500 students. Ever since then the figure have blossomed to about 21,000 students.

On May 5, 1989, the university expanded its borders by opening another campus in Downtown Vancouver. You can find this campus along with its comfortable research library at 515 West Hastings Street right next to the Habour Centre.
