Quebec City is keen on building a new arena to house a major NHL team, such as the former Quebec Nordiques. The city is looking to the federal government to help fund the construction of a new ice arena. The arena will be used for possibly a new NHL team plus it may also be used for public amateur sports.
Currently there is a debate as to whether or not the federal government should fund part or even up to half of the $400 million needed to build this arena. Critics say that if the federal government funds this project then any other city across the country can use the excuse that their arena will be used for amateur sports and seek federal funding.
Proponents of the Quebec City arena say that the arena will be used for amateur sports, recreational use and for possibly bidding on the next Winter Olympics.
