The Conservative government is going to make some serious new changes to the Canadian national census. The Conservatives are going to replace the long mandatory form with an optional form. Currently, about 20% of households are sent the form to complete and it is mandatory. Under the new reform brought by the Stephen Harper government instead 30% of households will be mailed a census which is optional to complete and return.
Munir Sheikh, head of StatsCan has given his resignation notice. Sheikh says that he is opposed to the changes to the census form. "This relates to the question of whether a voluntary survey can become a substitute for a mandatory census. It cannot," according to Sheikh.
