Vancouver Winter Attractions

December 10, 2007
Vancouver, Canada is known for it's winter activities. In fact, in the minds of many Canada itself is generally viewed as a winter getaway and with good reason.

There are lots of activities for visitors in Canada to enjoy. Believe it or not, many of these activities don't even involve snow. This list of winter activities will help you plan your activities while vacationing in Vancouver this winter.

  1. Sightseeing in Vancouver
In Winter Vancouver is a beautiful city. The city pays for Christmas light decorations on many public streets. One of the best ways to see the city for low-cost is by using public transportation. It's fun for kids of all ages to enjoy a ride on the Skytrain or Seabus. Both the Skytrain and Seabus are publicly operated by the city so fare cost is low. The Skytrain is a monorail system which spans the city. The Seabus provides a boat ride which takes visitors from downtown Vancouver to North Vancouver. For more information on transportation please refer to Vancouver transportation methods. You can plan a fun filled day by taking the Skytrain and getting off at Waterfront station. Tour the downtown city and be sure to visit historic gastown. Then use your All-Day bus pass to board the Seabus and visit North Vancouver. Upon arriving in North Vancouver you'll be able to tour the Lonsdale Quay Public Market. Enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner in the public market. Why not plan to spend the afternoon in downtown Vancouver and have lunch at a local restaurant. Then take the Seabus in mid-afternoon and tour North Vancouver then dine at the Lonsdale Quay Market or enjoy a hearty dinner at one of the local restaurants. We suggest using public transportation to get around the city as it's much cheaper than tour buses and the city is relatively easy to navigate. Public transportation in the city is excellent.
Depending on which area you'd like to stay, generally a skytrain station is close-by most Vancouver hotels.

  2. Cypress Mountain
If you're an amateur or avid skier then you'll want to visit Cypress Mountain. The latest Cypress Mountain news says that the Alpine and Nordic areas are open for skiing from 9am to 4pm. The Alpine area features a beginner's chair ride. In the Nordic trail the lower trails are open for cross-country skiing as well as snowshoeing. Cypress offers some of the best in local skiing, however, some runs may be closed due to snow conditions.

  3. Grouse Mountain
In addition to Cypruss you may wish to visit Grouse Mountain. This mountain is located in North Vancouver and is accessible by public transit. You may wish to make your way to downtown Vancouver using the bus or skytrain and then take a bus to take you to Grouse Mountain. Or you may take the seabus to North Vancouver and then take a bus to take you to Grouse Mountain. Once you reach Grouse Mountain you'll have to purchase a ticket to board the Skyride, a cable car, which whil take you to the top of the mountain. Activities at the top of the mountain include The Theatre in the Sky, The Refuge for Endangered Wildlife, Snowshoeing, Ice Skating, Sleigh Rides, The Peak of Christmas. Or you may wish to go up to the top enjoy a breath-taking view of Vancouver and snuggle up with a cup of hot chocolate. For more information visit Grouse Mountain website.

  4. Whistler Mountain
No visit to Vancouver is complete in winter without a visit to Whistler Mountain. Whistler Mountain can be reached by either driving a rental car, taking a train, or by tour bus. As it will be a lengthy trip to Whistler you should plan on booking a Whistler hotel stay. We suggest that you spend three days in Whistler. Whistler Village offers lots of shopping and dining. Each night you should enjoy dinner at a different restaurant. There are lots of activities such as skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling or just relaxing. Whislter is a quaint getaway from the big city, though it's growing popularity is leading to more of a commercial nature to the resort community.
