General Information

Walking down from Denman Street you will bypass rows upon rows of shops selling all types of ethnic food. Be sure to sample some sushi or wraps. You can always take them down to a long strip of sandy beach which is known as the English Bay.

Walking out of Stanley Park along the Seawall from what is known as Second Beach, you will arrive at Beach Avenue on your left. To your right, you will find the English Bay, one of Vancouver's oldest attractions. Swimmers have flocked to this beach since the 1890's making it one of the most popular hang outs in Vancouver.

For a midsummer night's extravaganza, why not head down to the English Bay for the Celebration of Lights which is usually held each year in the month of July. Countries of the past have included the UK, Mexico, Spain, USA, Italy and Australia. During the celebration three countries are chosen to come together in order to compete in a night of spectacular firework display drawing a huge number of crowd to the beaches. The fireworks usually last for a period of three weeks, with the finale event a crowd pleaser.

If you intend to come to the fireworks, it is a good idea to park somewhere along Bute Street or take the public transport. Most streets will be close off to vehicles, making it difficult for any cars to get through. Come early and reserve a good spot before the fireworks start. You can also pack a warm blanket, floor mat, a good book and a picnic basket.
