The British Columbia Institute of Technology or the BCIT was founded in 1964 by the government of British Columbia.

Since then, it has grown into a huge campus with approximately 14,000 full time student and 24,000 part time student enrolling each year. There are approximately 1,445 full time staff and 566 part time faculty staff.

The BCIT boasts a fire simulation theatre, a fully operational pulp mill, a planetarium, an operating demonstration forest in Golden Ridge Park, a modern radio and television broadcasting studio, an automatic manufacturing robotics lab and the only prosthetics and orthotics training program in Western Canada.

There is also a Downtown Campus which is has an electronic library, research and development facility.
